Traditional carnival festival in Cerknica

From Fat Thursday until Ash Wednesday town of Cerknica changes its name into Butale and control of the city is taken over by Butalci, comical figures from well known satirical novels written by Slovenian writer Fran Milčinski.

We decided to visit Cerknica on Sunday, when main event of the carnival takes places. Since we arrived early and the sun was quite warm, we decided to take a short walk from nearby village to the town center of Cerknica instead of taking organized bus. And this proved as an excellent idea, since we spend next two hours standing in shade, shaking. Putting this aside, it was an excellent family day enjoying the procession of masked people and giant paper-mash sculptures.
